Can my child with an IEP be suspended? (More in depth explanation)

    Description

IDEA’S 10-DAY RULE: Consecutive vs. Cumulative School Days!

Are you familiar with the difference between 10 consecutive school days and 10 cumulative school days when it comes to disciplining a student with an IEP?

    Under IDEA, these distinctions matter!

In this video, we’re breaking down: -Authority of school personnel and disciplinary protections.
    – When disciplinary removals constitute a change of placement.
-The 10-school-day threshold for educational services.
-When a manifestation determination review (MDR) is required.
-Questions parents should be asking their school districts.

Knowledge is power, but knowing where to find the regulations is just as important! I encourage you to look up the IDEA regulations referenced in this video and read them for yourself.

Should I keep a copy of the IEP?

    Description

    SPECIAL NEEDS PARENTS: DOCUMENT EVERYTHING!

One of the most powerful tools you can have when advocating for your child is an organized paper trail. 📂

Don’t rely on memory alone. Keep copies of IEPs, evaluations, progress reports, emails, meeting notes, Prior Written Notices (PWNs), written requests, and school responses.

Start a communication log. Record dates, conversations, concerns, and promised follow-ups. Organize your documents chronologically and keep a digital backup.

Remember: Documentation isn’t about creating conflict with your child’s school. It’s about being informed, prepared, and able to participate meaningfully in decisions about your child’s education.

Your child’s educational journey deserves to be documented.

Do you use a physical binder or a digital folder to organize your child’s special education records? Tell us in the comments!

A medical diagnosis, IDEA eligibility, and Social Security disability benefits are three different things!

A diagnosis does not automatically guarantee an IEP or SSI benefits. Likewise, not qualifying under IDEA does not automatically mean a child has no disability or cannot qualify for Section 504 protections.

Understanding the differences can help families ask better questions, gather the right documentation, and advocate for their children.

Do parents need to get outside evaluations during the IEP evaluation process?

Not necessarily—but school evaluations and medical/private evaluations can serve different purposes. Sometimes, having additional information can help the IEP team better understand a child’s needs.

Before spending money on a private evaluation, ask yourself: “What question am I trying to answer with this evaluation?”

Parents can also provide outside reports to the school and ask the IEP team to consider that information.

    Description

Is your child with an IEP being repeatedly sent home because of behavior?

Repeated removals can raise important questions under IDEA. A series of removals totaling more than 10 school days may constitute a change of placement when the removals form a pattern. The U.S. Department of Education also explains that repeated informal removals, such as shortened school days, may count in certain circumstances.

And remember: IDEA is federal law, but your state may have additional requirements or protections. Check your state’s special education and discipline rules, too.

Document the dates, reasons, length of each removal, and missed instructional time—and ask questions.

Outpatient therapy and school-based therapy can both be important for a child, but they serve different purposes. ❤️ Just because your child receives therapy outside of school does NOT automatically mean they don’t need related services through their IEP. School-based services are connected to the child’s ability to access and benefit from their education, while outpatient therapy generally addresses medical, developmental, or functional needs. As a parent, you can provide outside therapy evaluations, progress reports, and recommendations to the IEP team and ask what data is being used to determine your child’s educational needs. Understanding the difference can help you ask better questions and participate more confidently in the IEP process. 📚 Free educational videos to empower families as they navigate special education. One of the most rewarding parts of advocacy is seeing a family go from feeling overwhelmed to feeling prepared and confident to advocate for their own child.

My goal is never to take a parent’s voice away—it’s to help parents understand the process, organize their concerns, ask meaningful questions, and feel equipped to use their own voice.

When I can finish an advocacy job knowing a parent feels ready to walk into that meeting and advocate for their child, that’s a win.

    Description

RED FLAG WEDNESDAY: Can a parent request an interpreter for an IEP meeting?

Yes! Under IDEA, schools must take whatever action is necessary to ensure parents understand the proceedings of the IEP meeting, including arranging for an interpreter when appropriate.

Meaningful participation requires meaningful understanding. Parents should be able to understand what is being discussed, ask questions, share concerns, and participate in decisions about their child’s education.

If you need an interpreter, make your request in writing and in advance so the school has an opportunity to arrange appropriate support.

    - What specific concerns are you seeing?

    - How will we know if they’re working?
    - When will we review the data and decide on next steps?

Remember: the goal isn’t to make an autistic teen “more social.” The goal is to help them find connection, belonging, acceptance, and genuine friendships. ❤️ I’m Sarah Ancell, a non-attorney special education advocate and parent of a child with special needs. I share free videos to empower families as they navigate the special education system. My child and I feel lonely

    Description

Sometimes the loneliest part of the special needs journey is feeling like no one truly understands.

Over the last week or two, I’ve spoken with several parents, and so many have shared that they feel very alone. 💙

Our children deserve inclusion, friendship, and belonging—and parents, guardians, and caregivers deserve a community that supports them, too.

If you’re feeling alone, please know this: you are not alone. And if you know a special needs family, reach out. Include them. Listen. Show up. Sometimes knowing someone cares can make all the difference.

Inclusion isn’t just being present. Inclusion is belonging. ❤️

Asking the school for supports and school says that’s not possible

    Description

Red Flag Wednesday: “That’s Not Possible.”

Have you ever asked about a support, accommodation, or service for your child and been told, “That’s not possible” or “We don’t do that”?

Before accepting that answer, ask questions. 💬

    -Why isn’t it possible?
    -What does the data show?
-How does this decision address my child’s individual needs?
-What other options can the team consider?

You don’t have to be confrontational to be an effective advocate. Sometimes, advocacy starts with simply asking “Can you help me understand why?”

Your voice matters. Your concerns matter. And you are an important member of your child’s IEP team. ❤️

    Special education myth busting

    Description

    🚨 SATURDAY MYTH BUSTER! 🚨

Let’s bust some special education myths! 📚

Today’s myth: “If my child has an IEP, the school has to do everything I ask for.”

Parents are a critical part of the IEP team, and your voice, concerns, and knowledge of your child matter. But the IEP is developed through a team process based on your child’s individual needs, data, and information from the team.

And remember—you don’t have to know all the special education terminology to be an effective advocate. Ask questions. Ask for explanations. Speak up when something doesn’t make sense.

    Full caption

#duet with @Marissa this book Just like you was brought to my attention today. I’ll definitely be checking out the whole book! As a mother, an educator, and a non-attorney special education advocate, I love books that help children understand that differences don’t make someone less. From what I’ve seen in this video I’m Just Like You is a beautiful reminder that children with disabilities and differences are children first. They have hopes. They have feelings. They have favorite things. They have strengths, personalities, and dreams. And yes, they may do some things differently than you do. But different doesn’t mean less. As a mom, I know how important it is for our children to see themselves represented—and for other children to learn to appreciate differences instead of fearing them. As an educator, I believe inclusion begins with understanding. And as an advocate, I want families to know this: your child does not have to become more like everyone else to deserve belonging, acceptance, and the support they need to thrive. So let’s teach our children to look beyond the difference and see the person. Because underneath the differences… we really are more alike than we are different. And sometimes, the best way to teach inclusion is simply to say: “I’m just like you.” Thank you Marissa for this book I’m looking forward to reading the whole thing. My little lived the video too! #specialeducation #inclusion #inclusionmatters #SpecialEducationAdvocacy

🙏 Advocacy Sunday: Pray. Prepare. Advocate.

If faith is an important part of your life, this message is for you. ❤️

Advocating for your child means knowing your rights, doing your research, asking questions, and getting help when you need it. But it also means remembering that you don’t have to navigate this journey alone.

Parents of children with disabilities are often learning as they go. There isn’t a degree that teaches us how to navigate special education, research disabilities, advocate effectively, or find the right supports for our children. We spend countless hours reading, asking questions, attending appointments, and trying to implement recommendations while balancing everyday life.

Please don’t assume we aren’t trying. Please don’t assume we don’t care. Please don’t assume we aren’t doing the therapy homework or implementing strategies. Most families are doing the very best they can with the information, resources, and support they have.

    Funny parenting moment

    Description

There is nothing quite like hearing your child find their voice. For us, every season has brought a different way of communicating. We’ve celebrated communication through communication boards, PECS, sign language, AAC, and now spoken words. Every step has mattered, because communication has always been the goal.

The child who once struggled to communicate is now helping Daddy tell stories, sharing opinions, and keeping everyone laughing. These are the moments that remind you just how far they’ve come.

Whether it’s spoken words, signs, AAC, gestures, or another form of communication, being able to connect with others is a huge milestone worth celebrating.

Parenting isn’t always easy, but sometimes the biggest victories come wrapped in the funniest moments. I’ll never get tired of hearing those little comments I once wondered if I’d ever hear.

To every parent waiting for milestones to come—don’t lose hope. Celebrate every step forward, every new way your child communicates, and every laugh along the way.

What’s the funniest thing your child has ever said? All communication counts. Tell me in the comments!

    What is an IFSP?

    Description

What is an IFSP, and why is it so important for babies and toddlers?

An Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP) is designed for children from birth to age 3 who qualify for early intervention services. Unlike an IEP, an IFSP focuses on the entire family, helping caregivers support their child’s development through everyday routines and activities.

Early intervention can make a lasting difference. The sooner families have the right support, the better equipped they are to help their child reach important developmental milestones.

What can a non- attorney special education advocate do?

    Description

What Can a Non-Legal Special Education Advocate Do?

A non-legal special education advocate can help families better understand the special education process and prepare to participate effectively in educational planning.

Depending on the situation, an advocate may:

    - Explain special education terms and the IEP process in plain language.
    - Review educational records, evaluations, and IEPs.
    - Help parents prepare questions and priorities before meetings.
    - Assist with organizing records and documentation.
    - Attend IEP or other school meetings to provide support and help families communicate their concerns.
    - Help families understand their procedural safeguards and available options.
    - Provide education, resources, and information about special education.
    - Help families communicate more effectively with the school team.
    - Connect families with additional community and educational resources.

A non-legal special education advocate does not provide legal advice or legal representation.

The goal is to help families feel informed, prepared, and empowered to participate as members of their child’s educational team.

Every child deserves an individualized education, and every family deserves to understand the process.

Why does positive language in an IEP matter

    Description

The words we choose in an IEP matters!!!

An IEP should accurately describe a student’s educational needs while also recognizing their strengths, progress, and potential. Does parent and student input count as data?

    Description

“Does parent and student input count as data?”

Yes. Data is not only standardized test scores and numbers. In special education, decisions should consider multiple sources of information, and that includes the parent’s and student’s knowledge, experiences, concerns, strengths, and goals.

    Examples:
✅ A parent’s report that a child struggles with homework, communication, daily routines, or behaviors at home
✅ A student sharing what helps them learn or what barriers they experience
✅ A student describing their strengths, preferences, and goals
✅ Family input about changes they see over time

Parent and student input is important information that helps the IEP team understand the whole child and make informed decisions. A strong IEP uses both quantitative data (numbers, scores, measurements) and qualitative data (observations, experiences, input from those who know the student best).

One of the misconceptions I hear is, “My child has a diagnosis, so they automatically qualify for an IEP.” A diagnosis is an important piece of information, but it does not automatically make a student eligible for special education services. Schools must determine whether the student meets IDEA eligibility criteria and needs specially designed instruction because of their disability. Work hard and play harder

    Description

Reminder: We all know how hard our kids work to learn new skills and gain tools. Their services are important! I like to remind our child’s teams that she is a little girl and playing is a priority too. We do all of her appointments, therapies, homework and implement so many things at home but at the end of the day, a high quality childhood is a huge priority at our house! We work hard and we play harder! Now don’t get me wrong! Resting is important too! We have been known to take a day or two and just be in our pjs bc we are so busy. That said, sometimes when we are so busy playing can take a back seat more than it should. I know some of you may be feeling your schedule this summer but make a goal to do a minimum of two fun things a week this summer. Maybe it’s just a hose and bathing suits in the back yard or an icecream stop for a fun treat between therapies or a whole day at the pool. No matter what it is it doesn’t have to be an expensive thing or even something that takes more time than you have but prioritizing that play time is good for both the child, their parents and family! I loved my day with my sidekick today and it made me think of other therapy families. I’ve been there too and this summer we have been super busy but prioritizing quality fun together will never be something I regret.#therapylife #SpecialEducation #ChildDevelopment #IEP #SpecialNeeds

    Why early intervention is critical

    Description

Research consistently shows that early identification and intervention can lead to better developmental, educational, and long-term outcomes for many children. If you’re concerned about your child’s development, you don’t have to wait for someone else to notice. Asking questions and seeking an evaluation can be an important first step.

    SMART IEP goal

    Description

A SMART goal is a goal written to be:

    * S – Specific: Clearly describes the skill or behavior the student is expected to learn.
    * M – Measurable: Includes a way to objectively measure progress (such as accuracy, frequency, duration, or level of independence).
    * A – Achievable: Is appropriately ambitious while remaining realistic for the student to accomplish during the IEP period.
    * R – Relevant: Addresses the student’s unique needs that result from their disability and supports access to and progress in the general education curriculum, when appropriate.
    * T – Time-bound: Includes a timeframe for achievement, typically by the end of the annual IEP period.

It’s important to remember that being SMART alone doesn’t make an IEP goal appropriate. Under the IDEA, goals should also be based on the student’s present levels of academic achievement and functional performance (PLAAFP), address the student’s identified needs, and be designed to enable the student to make meaningful progress.

A SMART IEP goal is well-written, but it also needs to be individualized.

A SMART goal is a goal written to be: * S – Specific: Clearly describes the skill or behavior the student is expected to learn. #IEPGoals #SMARTGoals #SpecialEducation #LearnOnTikTok #EducationTok

No two students are the same

    Description

As I pack this medical stroller, I’m reminded of something important:

No two children are the same.

    Some students need medical equipment.
    Some need communication supports.
    Some need sensory accommodations.
    Some need behavioral supports.
Some need all of the above.

That’s why an IEP should never be copied and pasted from one child to another.

An effective IEP is built around the individual child’s unique strengths, challenges, and needs.

When the team takes the time to truly understand the whole child, the team can identify supports that help the student learn, participate, and reach their greatest potential.

    Because special education isn’t one-size-fits-all.

And neither are the children we serve.

Can a parent request an IEP meeting at any time?

    Description

Can you call an IEP meeting anytime?

Yes! Parents have the right to request an IEP meeting whenever they believe changes need to be discussed. You do not have to wait until the annual review if your child is struggling, their needs have changed, or their current supports aren’t working.

Remember: Requesting a meeting doesn’t guarantee every request will be approved, but it does start an important conversation about your child’s educational needs.#IEP #IEPMeeting #SpecialEducation #SpecialEducationAdvocate #NonAttorneyAdvocate

    4th of July Advocacy

    Description

This Fourth of July I want to remind everyone once again that sometimes advocacy happens even on the holidays when schools are closed, barbecues are happening and families meet. Advocacy isn’t always found in a doctors office, therapy appointments, or a school building. Sometimes advocacy is just recognizing the needs of another person, acknowledging that need and meeting it but most of all just loving them enough to insure the need is filled. Sometimes in those moments our plans get put on hold and that is OK!!!! The greater blessing is the time meeting the needs of someone you love anyway!!! Identify the need and love them enough to insure their needs are met. That my friends is the source of impactful advocacy.

What is L.R.E? Join me as we continue to decode the alphabet soup of Special Education. Parents often find that the acronyms that are thrown around in educational meetings can be confusing and intimidating. Getting familiar with the language that’s used in special education allows us to be informed, feel more confident and helps us to focus on advocating for our children so that they may reach their greatest potential. #Specialeducationadvocate #specialeducation #iepadvocate #SpecialNeedsParenting

Sometime advocacy happens even on the holidays when schools are closed, barbecues are happening and families meet. #familiesofchildrenwithspecialneeds #specialeducationadvocacy #specialneeds #parentingtips #specialeducationadvocate

I am both a non-legal Special Education Advocate and the mother of a child with special needs. Music is a powerful way to teach language, transitions, routines, academic subjects and more!!!! At our house we sing about sooooo many things and often make up our own songs to help aid in learning everything. Our kiddo no longer needs this song but this is one that we made up one day impromptu, tune and words just came to mind in the moment, for areas we needed to have some safety understanding! I hope this is a blessing to our fellow families of children with special needs. #familiesofchildrenwithspecialneeds. #specialeducationadvocate #specialeducation #ParentingSpecialNeeds#capcut
